Fire extinguisher refilling is needed after any use, when the pressure gauge is in the red, or when the service date on the label has passed. This process, also called fire cylinder refilling, means replacing the extinguishing agent and restoring pressure, then fitting a new service tag. A trained team with the right equipment should do it. Most ISI-marked ABC, CO2, water and foam extinguishers are refillable, but small disposable cans are not.
A refilled unit is only as good as the refill. Low pressure, damp powder or the wrong agent can leave an extinguisher that looks fine but fails in a real fire.
In short:
- When: after any use, when the gauge is in the red (or a CO2 unit is under weight), when the label date has passed, or when the seal or pin is broken.
- Who: a trained fire extinguisher refilling team, never at home.
- Cost: depends on the type, capacity and any parts or tests needed. Ask for a quote.
- Check: a new service tag, a green gauge (or a weight check for CO2), a new seal and an invoice.
When should you refill a fire extinguisher?
Book fire cylinder refilling whenever you cannot be sure the unit is full and pressurised. An extinguisher that has lost pressure looks the same as a good one, so use this table.
| Situation | Refill? | Why |
| You used it, even for a second | Yes | Pressure and agent drop, and you cannot tell how much is left. |
| Gauge needle is in the red | Yes | The unit has lost pressure. |
| A CO2 unit weighs less than the full weight on the label | Yes | CO2 units usually have no gauge, so weight shows the gas lost. |
| The service or refill date on the label has passed | Yes | Follow the date on the label. |
| The safety pin or seal is missing or broken | Yes, after inspection | You cannot confirm the unit is full. |
| Gauge is green (or weight is correct), seal is intact and the date is valid | No | Keep doing the monthly check. |
| Body is badly rusted, dented or the valve is damaged | No, replace it | A refill cannot fix a damaged cylinder. |
For the monthly checks you can do yourself, see our fire extinguisher maintenance guide.
How often should a fire extinguisher be refilled?
Follow the date on your unit’s label and the maker’s instructions. In India, IS 2190, the BIS code of practice for extinguisher maintenance, sets inspection, refill and hydro test intervals by type. Many ABC powder extinguishers carry a yearly refill or service date. CO2 extinguishers usually have no pressure gauge. They are checked by weight and refilled when the weight drops below the level on the label. Every refillable cylinder also needs a hydro test on its due date. Intervals differ by type, so after every fire cylinder refilling, ask the refiller to write the next refill date and the next hydro test date on the new tag.
Refilling, recharging and recertification: what is the difference?
Refilling replaces the agent, recharging restores the pressure, and a hydro test (recertification) checks the strength of the cylinder. In India most people say “fire cylinder refilling” for all of these.
| Term | What it means | When it is needed |
| Refilling | Replacing the extinguishing agent (powder, CO2, water or foam) | After use, or when the label date is due |
| Recharging | Restoring pressure so the unit is ready again, usually done with the refill | After any use |
| Hydro test (recertification) | Testing the strength of the cylinder under pressure | At intervals set by IS 2190 and the label |
| Service | Checking the gauge, valve, hose, seal and body | Yearly or as the label states, plus your own monthly check |
Is every fire extinguisher refillable?
No. Most portable ISI-marked extinguishers, including ABC dry powder, CO2, water and foam types, are refillable and can be reused after proper fire extinguisher refilling. Small disposable cans and aerosol-type units are not made to be refilled. Replace them after use or expiry. If you are not sure whether your unit is refillable, ask the refiller to check it before you pay.
How is each type of extinguisher refilled?
Fire cylinder refilling works differently for each type. Each one is refilled with the agent named on its label: ABC powder, carbon dioxide by weight, water, foam concentrate or a clean agent, then pressurised where needed.
| Type | What is refilled | Points to know |
| ABC dry powder | ABC powder, then pressurised to the level shown on the label | The most common type in homes and offices. The powder must be dry and of the correct grade. |
| CO2 | Carbon dioxide gas, filled by weight | The weight is checked, and the cylinder needs a hydro test on its due date. |
| Water | Clean water, with any additive the label asks for, then pressurised | Not for oil or live electrical fires. |
| Foam | Foam concentrate and water, then pressurised | Follow the maker’s mix on the label. |
| Clean agent | Specialist agent and equipment | Not every refiller handles these, so ask first. |
To choose the right type, read our guides on types of fire extinguishers and ABC vs CO2 extinguishers.
What affects the cost of fire extinguisher refilling?
Fire extinguisher refilling cost depends on six things: the type, the capacity, any parts that need replacing, whether a hydro test is due, the condition of the cylinder and how many units you send.
| Factor | Why it changes the cost |
| Type | ABC, CO2, water, foam and clean agent use different agents and equipment. |
| Capacity | A 9 kg unit needs more agent than a 2 kg unit. |
| Parts | A worn gauge, valve, hose or seal has to be replaced. |
| Hydro test | Needed when the test date is due. |
| Cylinder condition | A rusted or dented body may need replacing instead. |
| Quantity | Bulk jobs for societies, offices and factories are usually quoted per unit. |
Call us with the type and capacity of your extinguisher to get fire cylinder refilling charges. If a part is worn, spare gauges, valves and hoses are available, along with ABC powder for refills.
Can you refill a fire extinguisher yourself?
No. Fire extinguisher refilling needs the right powder grade, a dry filling setup and pressure equipment. A poor refill can leave low pressure, damp or clumped powder, or a leaking valve. Use a trained team, and ask for a new service tag.
How to check that you got a genuine refill
A genuine fire cylinder refilling job comes with a new service tag, a green gauge or correct weight, a new seal and an invoice. Check all of these:
- New service tag with the refill date and the next due date
- Gauge in the green zone (for CO2 units, a weight check instead)
- New safety seal and pin in place
- Correct agent for the type, for example ABC powder in an ABC unit
- Weight that matches the full weight on the label, where the label shows it (ask to see it checked)
- Clean hose, nozzle and valve with no cracks
- Invoice or job slip with your details and the date
Refill or buy a new extinguisher?
Refill it if the body is sound, the label is readable and it is ISI-marked. Replace it if it is damaged, unmarked, very old or a disposable can.
| Situation | Better choice |
| Body in good condition, readable label and ISI-marked | Refill |
| Badly rusted, dented or leaking body | Replace |
| No ISI mark or an unreadable label | Replace |
| Very old unit, or parts are no longer available | Replace |
| Small disposable can | Replace |
| You need extra units for a new room or floor | Buy new |
When buying, check for the ISI mark and IS 15683 on the label. If you are replacing, see our guide to the best fire extinguisher for a home or browse our fire extinguishers.

Frequently Asked Questions:
How often does a fire extinguisher need refilling?
Follow the date on the label and the maker’s instructions. Many ABC powder extinguishers carry a yearly refill or service date. CO2 extinguishers are checked by weight and refilled when the weight drops below the level on the label. Refill any extinguisher straight after use, or when the gauge is in the red.
Do I need to refill an extinguisher after a short spray?
Yes. Even a one-second spray can drop the pressure, and you cannot tell how much agent is left. Get it refilled and ready before you need it again.
Is every fire extinguisher refillable?
No. Most ISI-marked ABC, CO2, water and foam extinguishers are refillable. Small disposable cans and aerosol-type units are not made to be refilled, so replace them after use or expiry.
How much does it cost to refill a fire extinguisher?
Fire extinguisher refilling cost depends on the type, the capacity, any parts that need replacing, whether a hydro test is due, the condition of the cylinder and how many units you send. Call us with the type and capacity of your extinguisher to get the refilling charges.
What is the difference between refilling and a hydro test?
Refilling replaces the agent and restores pressure. A hydro test checks the strength of the cylinder under pressure. They fall due on different dates, so ask for both due dates on the tag.
Can a CO2 extinguisher be refilled?
Yes. A CO2 extinguisher is refilled with carbon dioxide by weight, and the cylinder needs a hydro test when its test date is due.
Where can I get a fire extinguisher refilled in Delhi?
MANXPOWER by Manx Impex does fire cylinder refilling at City Market, Ajmeri Gate, New Delhi (Mon–Sat, 10:30 AM–5:00 PM). Pickup is available, so call +91 11 4987 2937 to confirm your area. Doorstep refilling is not available.
Should I refill or replace an old extinguisher?
Refill it if the body is in good condition, the label is readable and it is ISI-marked. Replace it if it is badly rusted, dented or leaking, has no ISI mark or readable label, or is so old that parts are no longer available.
