What fire safety equipment does a school need?

A school needs ISI-certified fire extinguishers on every floor (water-based for classrooms, CO₂ for computer and science labs, a fire blanket and ABC for kitchens, ABC or CO₂ for electrical rooms), smoke detectors in hostels, an alarm system in main blocks, and a fire NOC from the State Fire Services Department.

THE RISK

A School Fire Doesn’t Wait for the Next Drill

An overloaded socket in a hostel room. A spark in the chemistry lab. Cooking oil in the canteen. On a campus the ignition sources are ordinary, spread across many buildings, and the people in them are mostly young. That is why schools and colleges must plan for fire as a standing responsibility, not a one-time purchase.

After Kumbakonam, the Supreme Court of India (13 April 2009) directed that schools install fire extinguishing equipment, train their staff to use it and meet National Building Code norms. Its minimum safety standards for schools include a fire safety inspection and NOC, mock drills and periodic inspections.Supreme Court of India, 13 April 2009

KNOW THE IGNITION SOURCES

What Causes Fires in Schools and Colleges?

Protection only works when it matches how fires actually start on your campus. These are the recurring sources we size equipment against.

Electrical overload

Air conditioners, projectors, smart boards and computer labs on old wiring or shared circuits.

Science labs

Burners, solvents and reagents used by students with varying supervision.

Canteen and kitchen

LPG cylinders, hot oil and exhaust ducts in mess and canteen kitchens.

Hostel rooms

Chargers, heaters, kettles and extension boards running overnight.

Libraries and records

Paper, files and wooden shelving that feed a small fire quickly.

Workshops and hot work

Welding, grinding and machining in engineering, ITI and maintenance sheds.

Generator and server rooms

Diesel sets, UPS banks and network racks close to occupied buildings.

Skipped maintenance

Expired refills and extinguishers nobody has checked since the last inspection.

MATCH THE EQUIPMENT TO THE AREA

Which Fire Protection Does Your Campus Need?

The wrong extinguisher can do more harm than good. Find the area, then the equipment that belongs there.

Fire classes (Indian Standard): A = solids such as wood, paper, cloth and plastics · B = flammable liquids · C = flammable gases such as LPG · D = metals · F = cooking oils and fats. Electrical equipment is not a separate class: pick an extinguisher tested for live electrical use, such as CO₂.

AreaWhat is thereRecommended equipment
AClassrooms & officesDesks, books, paper, cloth, wooden furniture, staff rooms and libraries.9 litre water-based extinguisherNon-toxic and ISI-certified (IS 15683). Add a CO₂ unit where smart boards or projectors are installed.
A BComputer & science labsLive electrical equipment, computers, solvents and chemicals.CO₂ extinguisherLeaves no residue, so lab equipment is not damaged.
F CCanteen & kitchenCooking oil, LPG and stoves, with a risk of small pan and gas fires.Fire blanket + ABC extinguisherThe blanket smothers pan and cooking-oil fires. Keep the ABC extinguisher for other kitchen fires. Plus a gas detector to warn of LPG leaks.
AHostel rooms & dormitoriesBedding, chargers, heaters and extension boards, with students asleep.Standalone smoke detectorsNo wiring needed. Sounds the alarm early, even at night.
AMain blocks & corridorsClassroom wings, auditoriums and staircases where many people move at once.Conventional alarm panel + detectorsZone-based panel (2 to 16 zones) with detectors, call points and hooters. Plus hose reel drums on each floor for first-aid firefighting.
BGenerator & electrical roomsDiesel generators, panels and UPS banks.ABC or CO₂ extinguisherNever use water on live electrical panels.

Final selection, placement and quantity must follow IS 2190:2024 and your local fire authority — this table is a starting point, not a substitute for a site assessment.

COMPLIANCE

Campus Fire Safety in India, Made Simple

An inspection rarely turns on whether you own equipment. It turns on whether the right equipment is installed, marked, accessible and in service. We supply against the standards your inspector will actually cite.

Requirements and fire NOC rules vary by state and are revised periodically. Confirm current requirements with your local fire authority before relying on this page.

ANSWERS

School and Campus Fire Safety: Frequently Asked

Most schools need a mix. A 9 litre water-based extinguisher is non-toxic and suits classrooms, libraries and offices. Use CO₂ in computer and science labs, a fire blanket and ABC extinguisher in kitchens, and ABC or CO₂ in generator and electrical rooms.

There is no fixed number per room. IS 2190 and your local fire authority set the count based on floor area, occupancy and hazard, with extra units for labs, kitchens and electrical rooms. Share your floor plan and we will size it for your buildings.

Yes, in most cases. The Supreme Court’s 2009 judgment sets minimum safety standards for schools that include a fire safety inspection and NOC, and CBSE bye-laws require schools to follow state fire safety rules. Colleges and hostels need one under state fire rules. Thresholds and renewal cycles vary by state, so check with your local fire authority.

Standalone smoke detectors need no wiring and sound an alarm in the room itself, which suits hostel rooms and staff quarters. For larger blocks, a conventional panel with detectors, call points and hooters covers whole zones.

Check every extinguisher visually once a month for pressure, seal and damage, and get it serviced by a qualified technician at least once a year. Refill it immediately after any use. IS 2190 sets the detailed maintenance intervals for each type. We offer refilling and service support.

Yes. We quote multi-campus orders together for school groups, trusts and universities. Share your locations and quantities.

Yes. We dispatch from New Delhi to schools and colleges across India.
