Factory fire safety — frequently asked
Most factories need a mix: ABC dry powder for general solid/liquid/gas risk, CO₂ or clean agent near live electrical panels, and Class D powder wherever combustible metal swarf or dust is present. The right mix depends on what’s stored and processed on your floor.
IS 2190:2024 and your local fire authority set the count based on floor area, occupancy and hazard class — not a fixed “one per X sq ft” rule. We size this against your actual layout during a hazard assessment.
Section 38 of the Factories Act, 1948 requires every factory to take practicable measures to prevent fire, and to provide and maintain safe escape routes and firefighting equipment. A related clause requires workers to be trained in the escape routine.
Most states require a Fire No-Objection Certificate from the State Fire Services Department before occupancy, assessed against NBC 2016 and state-specific fire rules. Requirements and renewal cycles vary by state — check with your local fire authority.
